Tannins & Tea-Colored Water

Tannin filtration for yellow, tea-colored well water.

Yellow water, musty taste, dingy laundry? You may have tannins, and a standard softener won’t remove them. We install an anion exchange tannin filter on the same Clack WS1 valve as our softeners, and add a refillable calcite tank only when the treated water’s pH drops below 7.2.

Tannins: tea-colored well water in a glass

In short

What it is
Natural organic matter from decaying leaves and peat, dissolved in the water the well draws through. Not a health hazard; it is the same thing that colors a cup of tea.
What it does to the house
Yellow or tea-colored water that gets worse after heavy rain, yellow laundry, a musty or earthy taste. A softener and an iron filter both pass it straight through.
What fixes it
A tannin filter: anion exchange resin on the same valve and salt as a softener. We test the treated water afterward and add a refillable calcite tank only if the pH drops below 7.2.

Is this your water?

Tannins are natural organic acids from decaying leaves and peat that carry a negative charge, which is exactly why a softener, built to grab positive ions, does nothing for them. An anion resin holds the opposite charge, so it captures tannins and releases a harmless chloride ion in trade. The same salt regenerates it.

Anion Exchange Tannin Filter

Clears tea-colored water without trading it for a plumbing problem

valve / tank warranty
  • Removes what a softener can't. Tannins are negatively charged organic acids. Strong-base anion resin captures them the way softener resin captures hardness: the opposite charge, the same proven mechanism.
  • Same valve, same salt. The Clack WS1 metered valve regenerates the anion resin with ordinary softener salt. Nothing new to learn, nothing exotic to buy.
  • pH correction when it's needed. Anion exchange strips bicarbonate and can lower pH. We test the treated water; if it drops below 7.2, we add a refillable calcite tank that restores it. Self-limiting, so it can't overshoot.
  • Meters actual use. Regenerates on gallons treated, not a timer, so tannin breakthrough doesn't sneak up between cycles.
  • Charger Matrix series with the Clack WS1 control valve, the same platform as our softeners, serviced the same way.

Ends the yellow water

Tea-colored tubs, dingy white laundry and a musty taste stop at the source. Color that used to worsen after every heavy rain stays gone.

Why your softener didn't fix it

Softener resin is a cation exchanger built for positive ions like calcium. Tannins carry a negative charge and pass straight through. Anion resin is the right tool.

Protects your plumbing

Low-pH water attacks copper pipe and brass fittings. If your treated water falls below 7.2, a calcite tank brings it back into range, so you trade one problem for zero, not for another.

Sized to your water

We test tannin level, alkalinity, pH and hardness, then size the resin bed and neutralizer to your well and your household, not a one-size-fits-all box.

How it works

  • Anion exchange. Water passes through resin charged with chloride. The resin's positive sites capture negatively charged tannin molecules and release a harmless chloride ion in exchange.
  • Regeneration. When the bed is loaded, salt brine flushes the tannins to drain and reloads the resin with chloride, overnight, automatically.
  • pH check, and calcite only if needed. Removing bicarbonate can push pH down. If treated water tests below 7.2, we add a calcite tank: crushed calcium carbonate that dissolves just enough to restore alkalinity. It's sacrificial by design, topped off at service visits.

Questions we get at the kitchen table

Why won’t my softener remove tannins?

Softener resin captures positively charged ions like calcium and magnesium. Tannins carry a negative charge, so they pass straight through. The tannin filter uses the opposite kind of resin, built for exactly that.

Why would treating tannins make my water acidic?

The anion resin can strip alkalinity along with the tannins, which lowers pH. We test the treated water, and if it falls below 7.2 we add a refillable 10×54 calcite tank that brings it back up. If it doesn’t, you don’t pay for one.

Is it the same salt as my softener?

Yes. Same salt, different resin, opposite job. If we deliver salt for your softener, the tannin filter is covered on the same trip.

Why does the color get worse after it rains?

Rain and snowmelt move more organic material through the soil and into shallow groundwater, so tannin levels rise with the water table. A filter sized for the wet season handles the dry one easily.

What’s the warranty?

5 years on the Clack WS1 valve and 10 years on the tank, the same as our softeners.
