Water softener installation, sized to your water.

Spotty glasses, soap scum, crusty faucets? That’s hard water, and most homes around here have 2 to 3 times the level considered “very hard.” We test your water at your house, size a softener to your household, and install it ourselves.

Hard water: scale on a faucet and spots on a glass

In short

What it is
Calcium and magnesium that groundwater dissolves out of limestone on its way to the well. Nearly every home around here has it, city water included.
What it does to the house
White crust on faucets, spots on glasses, soap that won't lather, stiff laundry, dry skin, and scale inside the water heater that makes it run longer and die sooner.
What fixes it
A water softener. Resin beads trade the calcium and magnesium for sodium, and salt brine recharges them. We size it to your hardness and your household, and we recommend a twin tank so soft water never pauses.

Is this your water?

Groundwater around Kalamazoo picks up calcium and magnesium from the limestone and dolomite the glaciers left behind. Above 7 grains per gallon is hard; above 10 is very hard. A softener trades those ions for sodium on a bed of resin, then rinses the resin clean overnight.

5 years valve • 10 years tank
valve / tank warranty
  • Removes hardness at the source. Calcium and magnesium are captured by ion-exchange resin before they reach your water heater, fixtures or laundry.
  • Meters actual use. A demand-initiated valve counts gallons and regenerates only when the resin is actually spent, not on a timer that guesses.
  • Efficient on salt and water. Regeneration is sized to what was used, so you're not flushing a full-capacity brine cycle after a light week.
  • Quiet, automatic, hands-off. Regenerates overnight on its own. You keep the brine tank stocked; the system does everything else.
  • Twin tank available. For homes that can't tolerate any hard-water window during regeneration, we offer a twin alternating version; details below.
  • Charger Matrix series with the Clack WS1 control valve, the most widely serviced residential valve in the industry.

Protects your appliances

Scale is an insulator. Removing hardness keeps water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines running at design efficiency and extends their service life.

Less soap, cleaner everything

Soft water doesn't form calcium soap curd. Detergent, shampoo and cleaner use drops, and dishes, glass and fixtures come out spot-free.

Sized to your water

We test your hardness and iron, count bathrooms and people, and size resin volume and flow rate to your household, not a one-size-fits-all box.

Built to be serviced

Standard resin tanks and a field-serviceable valve: parts that any technician can maintain for decades, installed by people who will be here to do it.

Need soft water every hour of every day?

Most homes are fine with a single tank: regeneration runs overnight and takes about an hour. For households that can’t tolerate any hard-water window, we also install a twin tank version that alternates between two resin tanks, so one is always in service.

  • Never runs out. Two resin tanks alternate: while one regenerates, the other is in service. The house is never on hard water, even during regeneration.
  • Meters actual use. Regenerates based on gallons treated, not a timer, so every cycle runs the bed to true capacity.
  • Lower salt and water use. Full-capacity cycles at efficient brine dosages mean fewer regenerations per year and less salt per grain removed.

How it works

  • Ion exchange. Water passes through resin beads charged with sodium. The resin trades sodium for calcium and magnesium, holding the hardness on the bead.
  • Regeneration. When the resin is exhausted, brine flushes the captured hardness to drain and recharges the beads. It happens overnight and takes about an hour.
  • Nothing to reset. The valve counts gallons and schedules regeneration automatically. You add salt; it does the rest.

Questions we get at the kitchen table

How do you decide what size softener I need?

From your test results and your household: hardness and iron in grains per gallon, plus how many people and bathrooms use the water. Capacity runs from 24,000 to 64,000 grains, so the system fits the house instead of the other way around.

How much salt will it use?

About 12 lbs per regeneration, and the Clack WS1 valve meters your actual use, so it only regenerates when the resin is spent. The brine tank holds 240 lbs. We can deliver and load salt on a schedule if you’d rather not haul bags.

Will a softener take care of my iron staining?

Only a little. A softener captures some dissolved iron, but iron fouls the resin over time and staining starts at just 0.3 ppm. If your test shows iron, we put an Iron Breaker ahead of the softener.

Do I need a twin tank?

Only if your home can’t tolerate a short hard-water window while the system regenerates overnight. Most households never notice it, so a single tank is the right answer for most homes.

What’s the warranty?

5 years on the Clack WS1 valve and 10 years on the tank, installed and serviced locally by the person who sold it to you.
